Frequently asked questions.

How do I get an estimate?+

Send a few clear photographs — cover, spine, and any damaged pages — to marketing@bjjahanianbook.com, or call the studio at (315) 469-8785 to schedule a free in-person consultation. You'll receive a written estimate within five business days.

How long does a typical project take?+

Most restorations move through the studio in four to ten weeks. Custom new bindings depend on materials; leather work with imported goatskin usually runs six to twelve weeks. Rush work is occasionally possible for an added fee.

Is restoration reversible?+

Every technique we use is chosen so that a future conservator can undo it. That means pH-neutral, water-reversible adhesives, Japanese kozo tissue for mending, and cotton or linen thread for sewing. We do not use pressure-sensitive tape, hot-melt glue, or synthetic leather.

Will restoration reduce my book's value?+

For most family and reading copies, thoughtful restoration increases both usability and sentimental value. For rare or collectible books, we always discuss market implications first — sometimes the right answer is a protective box, not a restoration.

Do you ship books to and from the studio?+

Yes. We provide double-boxed, insured shipping instructions and can arrange pickup for local clients within a 25-mile radius of Syracuse. Institutional clients often prefer to hand-deliver.

Do you take on commercial or bulk work?+

We take a limited number of institutional and small-batch commercial projects each quarter — typically dissertations, presentation volumes, or archival rehousing. Please contact us with details.

What forms of payment do you accept?+

Check, ACH transfer, and all major credit cards. A 30% materials deposit is due at the start of the project; the balance is due on collection or before shipping.

Are consultations really free?+

Yes. In-studio consultations by appointment are free, whether or not you decide to move forward. We consider it part of the trade.

Didn't find your answer?
